Aqua ( Aquamarine ) Quaker Parakeet
KNOWN BACKGROUND HISTORY

The aqua ( aquamarine ) mutation of the quaker parakeet ( myiopsitta monachus ) is a fairly recent mutation that has only been around since ( 1995 - 1996 ). It first originated in Belguim and then was exported into Holland and then the United Kingdom and started coming into Canada around 1999.

The first aquas ( aquamarine ) chicks to be born were hens. Two years later, cock birds were being produced.

I have sent feathers from my aqua hen Seafoam to get a feather analysis done with help from fellow aviculturist Scott Doak in Ohio, USA. Which were then sent to Inte Onsman of MUTAVI Research & Advice Group early 2002.

GENETICS

Not too much is known of the genetics of this mutation, as it seems to be fairly hush, hush.

We believe it to be a parblue mutation from the blue mutation ( recessive gene ) family. The parblue mutation is a recessive mutation gene. ***Update*** It has been confirmed that the aqua mutation is a parblue gene.

Now when paired with the blue quaker, it is then co-dominant over the blue mutation gene, which will result in single factor aqua quaker chicks ( having only one par-blue gene and one blue gene - split to blue ), which will be visually different from a double factor ( having 2 par-blue genes - aqua to aqua pairing ).

When paired with a normal green quaker ( wild-type - dominant gene ), it becomes recessive and all chicks will be green split to the aqua gene ( single factor par-blue gene ). Green quakers cannot be carrying a par-blue gene
( aqua gene ) and a blue gene at the same time. It is one or the other.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AQUA QUAKERS

LENGTH: Anywhere from 29 to 30 cm ( 11" to 12" )
WEIGHT: Anywhere from 90 grams to 110 grams

YOUNG: Chicks are born with a white down and the beak and toenails are a pale pink. At 1 week of age the toenails are starting to change color with a very light cinnamon tinge to them. Beak is still pink. By the time the chicks are 2 weeks old, the toenails are cinnamon and the beak is a darker pink and getting a beige tinge to it. By 3 weeks of age the toenails are a very dark cinnamon, the pink feet starting to turn light grey and more horn color to the beak.
